How to delete a file association in Windows 7

When you open a type of file (eg a .php file) for the first time Windows asks you to choose a program to open this file a.k.a “Open With” and from then on this type of file becomes associated with that program (unless you uncheck “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”). While you can change this program association via Control Panel there is no option in the GUI for removing it. Windows XP had an optionĀ  in the “Folder Options” (Tools Menu > Folder Option) dialog box to remove file associations but in Windows 7 you have to tweak the registry to delete a file type association. In this article we’ll see just that.

In addition to this I’ve also written on how to reset a .lnk file type association, this is when you/someone/some application accidentally (or intentionally) associates the .lnk extension with notepad (or some other program) this causes all shortcuts on your desktop and start menu to open notepad with absurd characters.Continue Reading…

Modify the user agent string sent by Internet Explorer by editing the windows registry. Internet Explorer sends a user agent string containing information about the IE version, OS version and some other information. You can edit it to add your own personal touch or to personalize your visit to a webpage. An example for a user agent Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727) if you carefully look at this string you can find that MSIE 6.0 denotes Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and Windows NT 5.1 shows the kernel version of a Windows XP operating System.Continue Reading…

Windows displays the last logged in username in the login dialog box thinking it would be useful for the same person if he or she logs in again. But it might be a security or privacy issue for some. Letting others know you’ve logged in to a particular computer might be a privacy issue for you. Even if welcome screen is enabled just hitting Ctrl + Alt + Del twice will bring up the dialog box which displays the last login username. Hiding it is a simple matter of editing a registry value.Continue Reading…

A registry tweak for command line warriors, even with the latest Windows AERO theme power users still prefer the command prompt to accomplish certain tasks. But navigating through folders and subfolders is painful especially if the folder names are long containing numbers and alphabets like a3f5a2ed3eea41ec9b2198da. Add a command prompt option to the context menu so that you can simply right click any folder select “Command Prompt” and the Command prompt opens with the specified folder as the working directory.Continue Reading…

Add Copy To and Move To in the Context Menu

This registry tweak adds great productivity to the Windows Operating System by reducing the number of clicks needed to copy or move the file. Usually when you want to copy a file to some other location what do you do? select the file, press Ctrl + C go to the destination and press Ctrl + P to paste the file. Or from the source you can select the file go to Edit -> Copy To Folder and select the location. But how cool it would be to get the options “Copy To” and “Move To” to the context menu when you right click a file or folder. Tweak your windows registry and brag among your friends on how you reduced the number of clicks.Continue Reading…
